Resulta que ese país insignificante (Israel es del tamaño de la Comunidad Valenciana) le prestó dinero a España, mucha, mucha plata

Israeli banks’ exposure to PIIGS: NIS 2.7b

Of Israel’s five biggest banks, Hapoalim has the greatest exposure to the PIIGS – NIS 1.1 billion.

But of that, less than half, NIS 410 million, is on-balance sheet. Hapoalim greatest exposure is to Spain: NIS 705 million, of which only NIS 178 million is on-balance sheet.

Hapoalim’s exposure to Ireland amounts to NIS 416 million, of which NIS 231 million is on-balance sheet.

Its main activity in Ireland is lending money to multinationals registered there because of tax breaks and other sweetheart terms Ireland offers to businesses. In its third-quarter report, Hapoalim classified NIS 25 million in loans to Ireland as doubtful debt.

The bank with the greatest exposure on its balance sheet is Leumi: NIS 726 million, but it classified only NIS 4 million as doubtful debt.

First International Bank of Israel, known locally as Beinleumi, has balance-sheet exposure of NIS 218 million to the PIIGS, and NIS 17 off-balance sheet. It defined NIS 30 million as doubtful.

Beinleumi’s main exposure is to Spain, where it has NIS 177 million of debt on its balance sheet.
