Mandelson vows to take on the doomsters

«There has been a lot of talking Britain down lately, and not only from coffee-shop owners. I understand the severity of our economic circumstances as well as anyone, believe me,» Mandelson told business leaders in north-west England.

«But as of today, I’m going to take on the doomsters and only talk Britain up. I do not underestimate the economic difficulties we face in this country. But the UK’s open and dynamic economy is a huge asset. We have some of the best-growing small firms in the world and some of the smartest and most skilled workers. Our regulatory environment is efficient and business friendly.» (…)  a combative Mandelson outlined plans to make Britain a competitive player in the global low-carbon economy.

Fighting words, milord. The constant doom that some English newspapers, like the Daily Telegraph, constantly print against the euro and the European economy -lies, to put it simply- doesn’t help, as many people would believe that where Greece or Ireland leads we’re sure to follow.

Sometimes it is counter-productive to read too many newspapers, watch too much TV and be constantly on the lookout for news.  The Internet now provides an overwhelming fare of infoload, and like all social object it takes a well informed, educated and skeptical mind to filter out the dross.  There’s even a name for this, a so-called law

Tuchman’s Law:

«The fact of being reported multiplies the apparent extent of any deplorable development by five- to tenfold.  Disaster is rarely as pervasive as it seems from recorded accounts. The fact of being on the record makes it appear continuous and ubiquitous whereas it is more likely to have been sporadic both in time and place. Besides, persistence of the normal is usually greater than the effect of the disturbance, as we know from our own times. After absorbing the news of today, one expects to face a world consisting entirely of strikes, crimes, power failures, broken water mains, stalled trains, school shutdowns, muggers, drug addicts, neo-Nazis, and rapists. The fact is that one can come home in the evening, on a lucky day, without having encountered more than one or two of these phenomena.»

Take care of this also, take care of the productive economy such as it is

Because if this sucker up and dies all of a sudden, there’s sure to be some unpleasantness.
